Mr. G's Class News 11/17-11/21
Stocks Quest Game 2 has begun! The top three portfolios will
win a prize at the end of the
game while the 1st place winner will receive a trophy! By
November 21st, the max amount in the cash account will be $25,000.
This serves two purposes: first it levels the playing field for
investment competition and second, it allows us to have data to use for
analysis at the end of the game.

This week in Algebra: Systems of inequalities and linear functions. You will need a number of coordinate planes this week. Also beneficial, having colored pencils will make graphing systems of inequalities neater. I really like this part of math and many of you will too. The graphing part is really fun!
This week in Science: Jim Peugh of Friends of Famosa Slough will be visiting us on Tuesday to introduce us to wetland ecosystems. Many of our online journals and the weekly science homework will be centered around learning about the slough. Outside of that, you will have the rest of the time to work on your projects See the calendar for the final due date. There will be a Science Test on Friday. The test is 20 multiple choice questions and students will contribute the questions asked.

Also DUE This Week:
Be sure to always complete your POW and online assignments (journals
and weekly science assignment). Both of
these have significant points that affect your grade.
Parents:
At any time, feel free to send me an email
for a quick grade check-up.
During the next two weeks, I will be updating ParentConnect. I update the online gradebook in bulk every 3-4 week.
Coming soon, I will also need parents to begin helping us with our
weekly trips to Famosa Slough. We are currently working on scheduling
a field trip to introduce students to the slough.
After School in Room 305: all students are invited to stay after
school each day (except Thursdays) to work on math homework and school
projects. This is a great opportunity for students to work in a peer
group for homework and to have me available for help. I usually stay
after school until at least 4:30pm. 6to6 students must first check-in
with 6to6 and get a pass. Exceptional behavior is expected during
after hours and students must understand that after school is also my
time to grade work and plan lessons.
Computer Acces: Students are welcome to use our laptops before and after school as well as during Lunch.
Open Office Software: If you do not have Microsoft Office at
home, I would suggest Open Office. They have compatible applications
to Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The office suite is a free download
for Mac and Windows. This is a great alternative to purchasing
Microsoft Office. Click HERE to visit Open Office's Website . Another (more practical) alternative is using Google Docs an it only requires internet access and a Google account .
Comic Life Software: Though students are not required to have
Comic Life at home, many students will want to have this program on
their home computer. The program is available for Mac and PC and costs
$25-$30. You can also download a FREE 30-Day trial. Click HERE to go to the Comic Life Download Page .
Inspiration Software: Students are not required to have
Inspiration or InspireData at home. They will use these programs several times while at
Correia. Some students may want to have them at home. The
programs are available for about $70 (download) each on a Mac or PC. You can
also download a FREE 30-Day Trial. Click HERE to go to the Inspiration product page .
Scratch Software: Scratch is one of my latest interest. It is a
scripting program that teaches more than just basic programming. The
software is developed by MIT's Media Lab. The software is FREE and
runs on a Mac or PC. Students may also register an account but need to
ask for Parent permission to do this. I approve of students having an
account on MIT's Scratch website since it is heavily moderated and has
a great support community. With an account, students can download
other projects to learn new ways to script animations and games. They
can also upload their own Scratch projects and share them with others
(our class, the world!). Click HERE to go to the Scratch homepage .
SMARTBoard Software:
If you would like to download our SMARTBoard Software for your computer
please first ask your parents! You do not need to have a SMARTBoard to
use the software and it is available for use on a Mac or a PC. We
discussed in class some amazing ways we can utilize our new SMARTBoard
and the software. If you are ever absent, you can email me and I can
send you the notebook file containing the entire
lesson used in
class. Or let's say you are having difficulty with a math problem, you
could create a notebook file at home outlining the problem. Then you
bring the file to class and we can use the SMARTBoard to explore the
problem. Possibilities are endless! Download the full install
(software and drivers). Use our class product key:
